The Swedish Life Saving Society (SLS) was founded in 1898 in Stockholm at a time when more than 1,000 persons drowned every year. The aim of SLS is to prevent drowning by promoting general swimming ability, water lifesaving and safety in and at waters and on ice. Nowadays there are less than 110 drownings a year.

SLS is organised with a General Assembly as governing body and a National Board. Every year, SLS educates more than 2,200 swimming teachers, pool attendants, lifeguards as well as instructors in these areas. The Association counts over 7,000 members in 24 regional organisations and clubs.

His Royal Highness King Carl XVI Gustaf is patron of SLS and also of ILS. SLS became member of FIS in 1967.
