Surf Life Saving is the leading water safety organisation in New Zealand and has been providing Surf Lifesaving services to New Zealand communities for nearly 100 years. Today they have 71 Clubs and 13,000 members throughout New Zealand.

Providing beach patrols on 80 of New Zealand’s busiest beaches each summer is just part of what they do. Being a proactive lifesaving service and providing a range of education programmes ensures that they keep New Zealand’s favourite playground safe for everyone.

The organisation reported the following data of 2007 to the Regional Secretary:

In the year ended 30 June 2007 SLSNZ’s lifeguards achieved the following inspiring statistics:

  • 1,604 Rescues
  • 1,788 First Aid Treatments
  • 303 Searches
  • 84,656 Preventative Actions
  • 167,313 Volunteer Patrol Hours

In June, the SLSNZ adopted a new 2007-2011 Strategic Plan.

The adoption by the New Zealand Government of the Drowning Prevention Strategy and the associated Implementation Plan’ for New Zealand has been a major undertaking in the last year. This continues to be a very significant activity for SLSNZ.

Considerable effort has gone into working with the Districts to assess their needs in relation to the challenge of providing effective governance in a volunteer organisation.

SLSNZ has continued to play its part in International Life Saving circles with representation on key committees in lifesaving and sport. SLSNZ has also been involved in activities within the Asia Pacific Region.

SLSNZ is very interested in hosting the 2011 World Water Safety Conference as this will be SLSNZ’s centenary year.
