The International Lifesaving Federation deeply regrets to announce the death of Charles Haughy, Patron of ILS.
Charles Haughey, former Prime Minister of Ireland and Patron of the International Lifesaving Federation, passed away peacefully at his home after a long illness. He will be buried in Dublin following a State Funeral.
Mr. Haughny was Irish Statesman, who played a highly significant and central role in national politics in Ireland over many years. He had a great love of the sea and all things associated with the sea. He was an exceptional sailor who sailed the waters of Ireland for many years. On one occasion he had to be rescued, his yacht having gone aground at the Mizen Head and this no doubt endowed in him a great respect for the many rescue services including International Lifesaving.
As a Patron of the International Lifesaving Federation he always felt honoured to be associated with the “World Body” that helped towards the preservation of life from drowning. He was one of the first Patrons and on the occasion of the inauguration of ILS he officiated with Mr. Bob Hawk (former Prime Minister of Australia and Patron of the International Lifesaving Federation) in Cardiff throughout the proceeding.
The International Lifesaving family sends the most sincere condolences to his wife and his family.
